Is Vegemite ok for dogs?
Dogs are our pets and our family – and we love sharing everything with them. So when we tuck into some gooey delicious Vegemite on hot buttered toast is it OK to make a slice for those puppy-dog-eyes too?
Truth be told no dog should be snacking heavily outside of his or her doggy food diet. Having said that, can dogs eat Vegemite? The answer is yes but only in very, very, very tiny amounts. To be precise, dogs can eat Vegemite in small quantities and only on occasion.
You might snack on it daily, but your darling dog shouldn’t.
Can dogs eat Vegemite with dog medicine?
Provided you’re within the limit and not overdosing your dog with Vegemite, it can help with giving doggy meds. That’s right. Some pet owners find that getting Rover to take his prescription medicine is easier when it’s paired with Vegemite.
Not only does it mask the icky taste of medication, but its gooey stickiness can help it go down more easily. The stickiness also helps when dogs who would otherwise navigate around the food and spit out pills, as it stays put and all goes down the gullet. A godsend when trying to give medicine to your puppy.
Just remember not to overdo it if you let your dogs eat Vegemite! The tasty stuff may not be toxic to them, but it’s certainly high in salt, which can be dangerous to pets.
A salt overdose can cause a pet’s brain to swell and lead to sodium ion poisoning with severe consequences. Salt is a common household item that’s bad for pets. Besides, when it comes to snacks of any sort dogs have no off-switch when snacking, so you have to keep them in check.
