Are you the type of person who more or less makes liking cats a part of your personality? Don’t worry, we get it — cats really are purrrfect. If you want to extend that love into even more aspects of your life, why not try out a classic cat themed game like Trap The Cat or Exploding Kittens?
The game took the world by storm after its start on crowd funding platform Kickstarter in 2015, and has been popular ever since. But if kittens that explode aren’t your thing, there are some other awesome feline themed games you’ll love:

#1 Trap The Cat
Trap The Cat is a simple yet addictive FREE puzzle game where the goal is to stop a cat from escaping a grid. The cat starts in the middle, and you need to click on the surrounding circles to block its path. Each time you block a circle, the cat moves to a nearby one, trying to find a way out. The challenge is to outsmart the cat and trap it before it escapes off the edge of the grid.
It’s a fun, quick-thinking game that gets surprisingly tricky as the cat seems to always find sneaky ways to get free. You can play Trap The Cat in your browser or on your phone.

#2 Stray
If PC or PS gaming is your thing, you’ll be very interested in the highly anticipated cat themed game Stray, which came out in July 2022. In fact, it’s been called “the best cat game ever made.” A third-person adventure game, its set in a dystopian neon cyberpunk city and you play the role of, you guessed it, a stray cat. Through its eyes, you will try to reunite with your family by navigating your way through the city and solving puzzles along the way.
The best part is all the cat behaviour you get to indulge in. You can scratch carpets, doors, and even electrical wires and snuggle up next to robots to give them some love. AND, get this, your PS controller even vibrates when you purr. (Speaking of cat behaviour, ever wondered why do cats knead or rub against you? We’ve got the info here).
Beautifully atmospheric, Stray features sumptuous graphics, incredible characters and the kind of captivating gameplay that will keep you absorbed for hours. No wonder IGN gave it 8 out of 10, Metacritic gave it 83%, and 98% of Google reviewers gave it a thumbs up. Yay for kitty content!
#3 Calico – a cat themed game about quilts
From the slick and highly anticipated to the quirky and unique, Calico is a board game with an interesting premise: make the prettiest and cosiest quilt so that you can attract cats to lie on it.
Like Exploding Kittens, its a multiplayer game that’s very quick to learn and fun for everyone. You compete with other players through collecting and placing patches of different colours and patterns. Each quilt has a particular pattern to follow, and you’ll need to create combinations that aren’t only aesthetically pleasing, but will attract the cuddliest cats! Isn’t that, after all, the reason cats have allowed us to inhabit their world?
Said this reviewer about the game: “Calico boasts gorgeous artwork, challenging but approachable game play, and a purr-fectly wonderful theme that will immediately resonate with something like 40% of the world’s population. Those of us who prefer dogs will be feline jealous after seeing just how much fun the cat people are having.”
#4 Exploding Kittens – the classic cat themed game
According to its website, Exploding Kittens was “created by two friends who went on vacation together” and “instead of windsurfing or whatever, they decided to make a card game.” CNN wrote: “It’s like Uno, except there are goats, magical enchiladas, and kittens that can kill you.”
Simply, the game consists of a deck of cards that each player must draw from. Some cards are “diffuser cards” (like laser pointers or catnip sandwiches) and others are Exploding Kittens. The aim of the game is to avoid drawing an Exploding Kitten card.
You can also strategise and plot against your competitors by using various action cards that let you, for instance, attack other players or force them to draw extra cards. Here’s a quick video of how it works:
It’s fun, fast, easy to learn, and packed with personality. No wonder it sold over 10 million copies and has 45 000 reviews. In fact, the game reached and exceeded its AUS$15 917 crowdfunding goal on Kickstarter in eight minutes. It’s since raised AUS$13.8 million on Kickstarter!
#5 Copycat
Copycat hasn’t been released yet at the time of writing this piece, but is set to come out in September 2024. What’s better, this is a proudly indie cat themed game created by a Sydney-based couple of cat lovers. Like Stray, you play through the eyes of a cat. Called Dawn, she’s described as “a skeptical shelter cat who would much rather hit the streets than be readopted again.”
But then she meets Olive, a lonely older Aussie mourning the disappearance of her own furry companion, Dawn and Olive form a bond and help each other heal their broken hearts. The description of the game is quite evocative:
“Copycat is a narrative-driven game that explores loneliness and belonging. See the world through cat eyes as you wander alleyways, fences and rooftops as you search for the warmth of human connection in a cold, dark world.” Judging by the trailer, this looks like something special and truly immersive:
