We reckon a weekend holiday is the perfect way to lean into the cosy aspects of the transition of seasons – fireplaces, hot chocolate, flowers beginning to bloom and more. Not to mention the opportunities for hiking in mild weather and even some skiing.
Yes, spring skiing is a thing in Australia. Mt Hotham, for example, “tends to have better snow in September“.
Regardless, it’s not all chilly weather and puffa jackets. Luckily, many regions of Australia in August and September have cold morning and nights but warm up in the day. It’s not unlikely to be basking in the sun on your new spring / winter getaways!
So, without further ado – here are some of our top short weekend getaways.
Winter weekend getaways Sydney (and spring too!)
You don’t have to drive very far out of Sydney to experience the splendours of New South Wales. Whether you’re doing a solo trip, going as a couple, or taking out the family, there’s an accommodation option for you.
NSW offers mountains, rainforests, outback towns, surfing, and wineries. No wonder it’s such a popular spot.
Fairmont Resort Blue Mountains
For high-end accommodation with all the amenities, Fairmont Resort is the place to go. It overlooks the awe-inspiring Jamison Valley and Leura Golf Course and offers five dining options, an indoor heated pool, spa, sauna, outdoor pool, tennis courts, gym, billiards room and library.
Parents will also love that the kids have entertainment options including indoor playgrounds. Whether you want to spend a day at the spa or go on a hike in the National Parks, Fairmont offers a winter getaway or spring getaway you won’t forget.
Oh, and before you set off, check these five holiday road trip hacks everyone should know.
Bilpin Springs Lodge
If you’re looking for fresh air, clear skies, and something a little more rustic – a stay at Bilpin Springs Lodge could be the ticket. This B&B is about 90 minutes from Sydney along a lovely drive that includes mountain scenery, sandstone walls and endless green fields.
The service is friendly, there’s canoeing and hiking, and your kids will love the games room and resident chicken, pony and alpaca. And the best thing about Bilpin Springs in the winter and spring? The rooms are warmed with reverse cycle air and heated towel racks!
Be sure to book one of their delicious farm breakfasts of eggs, sausages and local produce.
Winter and spring weekend getaways Melbourne
If you’re based in Melbourne, exploring the greater Victoria area is a good idea for a short break. Victoria’s Alpine Region will offer you the quintessential getaway, complete with mountains, skiing, snowboarding and cosy evenings indoors.
Mount Buller
Goggles at the ready, it’s time for snow sports in Mount Buller! Even if it’s not during one of your winter getaways, if you’re arriving there in spring Buller’s a state-of-the-art snow gun system ensures there’s always enough snow to enjoy.
Mount Buller is a resort village where you can ski, snowboard, toboggan, or go on some great bike trials and walks. Plus, there’s plenty of entertainment action once the snow’s gone.
History buffs will love a quick tour of The National Alpine Museum of Australia, which showcases the country’s alpine regions and chronicles the history of winter sports in Australia. And while you’re there, you may want the catch the Banff Mountain Film Festival with its line-up of adventure movies from around the globe.
If you’re keen for some R&R, you can take it easy at one of their great bars or restaurants, or book a visit to the one of the spas.
Hepburn Springs
In keeping with the R&R theme… If you’re into that unique feeling of stepping out of chilly air into a streaming hot spring, then Hepburn Springs is for you. Also a resort town, it’s in the middle of the largest concentration of mineral springs in Australia.
The area is surrounded by thick forests and gullies and has plenty of bathhouses, spas and wellness retreats to choose from – most of which utilise the region’s mineral water.
Kids will enjoy the playgrounds at the Hepburn Mineral Spring Reserve and Laurie Sullivan Recreation Reserve. To really let your hair down, pop in at The Palais – a bar and music venue that features sprung wooden floors great for dancing.

Teewah Beach
Great Sandy National Park isn’t all that cold in winter and even less so in spring; no wonder they call Queensland the Sunshine State. If you’re looking for one of those weekend getaways that makes you think of summer, then camping at Teewah Beach will tick the boxes.
This one’s for the more adventurous type, as you’ll need a four-wheel drive and beach driving permit to get there. Teewah Beach can only be reached during certain times of the day due to the tides. You’ll need to take all your own supplies – including tents, a gas cooker, food, drinking water and other essentials.
But once you’re there, you’ll be able to soak in clear blue skies and golden sand. Maybe even spot a dolphin! How’s that for a winter getaway or spring getaway with some heat to it?
