Alix, the entire PD team is incredibly proud of you. Well done! Our Senior Sales and Service Consultant, Alix, made history as the first female rider to complete the full 5-day, 500km journey in the 20th Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Ride for Sick Kids, cycling from Glen Innes to Newcastle. But Alix didn’t stop there—she went above and beyond by riding for over 18 hours straight at her local gym to raise even more funds.🏆Reflecting on her experience, Alix shared:"I was motivated to take part in the ride after visiting Ronald McDonald House Newcastle with the Soft Landings Foundation, and I was deeply moved by the stories I heard. I thought, what better way to combine my love for helping others with my passion for fitness? The generosity of the Soft Landings Foundation in matching my donations was beyond anything I could have imagined. This meant that in total, I’ve raised $15,000, which equates to over 100 nights of accommodation for a sick child and their family."Every donation, large and small, ensures RMHC can support more families. Tis the season of the Olympic Games. And it’s been French, fun, and fiercely competitive! But have you ever wondered what events our pets would dominate in if they had their own cat or dog Olympics?
In the spirit of the games, we’ve matched cat and dog breeds with what we think their star events would be. From gymnastics for Bengal cats to sprinting for Greyhounds – these are the dog and cat Olympic events that just make sense. Well, to us anyway. Enjoy!
In this article
100m sprint: Greyhounds
Okay, we know it’s an obvious one – but you can’t start an article about cat and dog Olympics without mentioning Greyhounds.
Their sleek, light and aerodynamic bodies make them prime contenders in the 100m sprint. Greyhounds have a high muscle-to-fat ratio, which means they have a lot of powerful muscles relative to their body weight. This gives them explosive acceleration, just like real Olympic sprinters. Their large hearts and lungs also pump more oxygen to their muscles, sustaining their high-speed runs.
Marathon: Siberian Huskies
When it comes to long-distance running – no breed does it quite like the Husky. That’s why we’ve chosen them as our ‘dog Olympics’ marathon runners.
Siberian Huskies can run long distances thanks to a few amazing traits that make them natural endurance athletes. First off, their bodies are built for it. They have a lean, muscular build that helps them conserve energy while running.
Huskies also have a special metabolism. Unlike many other dogs, they can run for hours and hours without burning out because their bodies can efficiently convert fat into energy. This means they don’t need to stop and eat as often, allowing them to keep going on those long journeys. There’s no doubt they’d top any dog Olympics marathon event!
Gymnastics: Bengal cats
Cats are natural gymnasts with their lithe, flexible bodies. But one feline that’s even more, er, gymnasty, is the Bengal cat. That’s why we’ve chosen them for the ‘cat Olympics’ gymnastics event.
One big reason for their flexibility is their wild ancestry. Bengals are descended from the Asian leopard cat, which is a small wildcat known for its agility and climbing skills. This wild lineage has given them a natural athleticism and flexibility that they still retain.
Additionally, Bengals love to play and climb, which keeps them in great shape. Their active lifestyle helps maintain their muscle tone and flexibility. They’re always exploring, jumping, and climbing, which keeps their bodies agile and flexible. They truly are Olympic-level cats!
Dog Olympics Boxing: Boxers (duh!)
It’s all in the name, okay? Some say Boxer dogs were named because of their playful habit of standing on their hind legs and batting at things with their front paws, almost like they’re throwing punches. It’s a bit like they already have a natural boxing stance!
Boxers are also very muscular and strong. They have powerful, athletic bodies that would give them a good advantage in the dog Olympics ring. Their build allows them to move quickly and deliver strong, forceful “punches” with their paws.
Additionally, Boxers are known for their high energy and endurance. In a real boxing match, stamina is key, and these dogs have plenty of it!
Swimming: Turkish Van cats
Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds are pups know for their love of water and could definitely get the gold in dog Olympics swimming. But did you know that some cats love water, too? The Turkish Van is a breed with a propensity for the deep, and we’ve chosen them as our cat Olympics swimming champs.
Turkish Vans have a bit of a wild ancestry. They come from the Lake Van region in Turkey, where they lived near water and had to swim and fish for food. This historical connection to water likely contributed to their comfort and enjoyment of it.
Their fur also plays a big role. Turkish Vans have a water-resistant coat, which means their fur doesn’t get soaked easily. This makes playing in water more comfortable for them, as they don’t get weighed down or chilled like other cats might. We’d definitely choose the Van for any cat Olympics swimming events!
Dog Olympics Tennis: Australian Shepherds
Last but not least, Australia’s beloved pup – the Australian Shepherd. We’ve chosen this stealthy breed as dog Olympics tennis players!
First off, they are incredibly agile and quick. Australian Shepherds can dart around with lightning speed, making them excellent at chasing down tennis balls. Their agility means they can change direction swiftly, just like a pro tennis player going for a tricky shot.
Their intelligence plays a big role too. Australian Shepherds are smart and learn new tasks quickly. They’d be able to pick up the rules of the game, understand strategies, and maybe even outsmart their opponents with some clever moves. We’re betting they’d bring home the gold for Aus!
Dogs in the real Olympics
This article was all in the spirit of fun, with no real Olympic events for dogs or cats currently in existence. However, that’s not to say that pets have no place in the Olympics. Just check out this article about Beacon – a 4-year-old Golden Retriever who works as a therapy dog for the US gymnastics team:
“He’s the organisation’s first therapy dog and its only part-time, four-legged staff member. He wears a credential, travels to important meets such as the Olympic trials and holds the title of USAG’s “Goodest Boy.”
Our pups sure do good work!
