There’s no such thing as an ugly dog 😤. Beauty comes from within, which means all dogs are breathtakingly beautiful 😍. But some pooches have unique faces and features that humans may label ‘ugly’ in a tongue-in-cheek way. There’s even a World’s Ugliest Dog Competition to celebrate these pups.
Many of these beautifully ‘ugly’ pooches were once shelter animals, so it’s awesome seeing them find loving homes and being celebrated. Here are some of the world’s ‘ugliest’ dogs …

World’s Ugliest Dog 2024: Wild Thang, the Pekingese
Wild Thang, a Pekingese, won the title of World’s Ugliest Dog in 2024. The pup hailing from Coos Bay, Oregon, had competed five times in the competition and finally took the title this year.
His quirks include that he’s 8 years old and toothless, has adorably wild hair and the fact that he apparently likes to sleep on ice packs. A pet cooling mat would work much better in our opinion, Wild Thang!
Diagnosed with canine distemper as a 10-week-old puppy, Wild Thang’s condition prevented the growth of his teeth and caused a muscular disorder in one of his legs. Wild Thang’s owner, Ann Lewis, will receive $5,000 and an appearance on NBC’s Today show.
The runner-up was a 14-year-old pug named Rome. Third place went to a 14-year-old mixed-breed dog named Daisy Mae, who was rescued from the streets at age two and has lost her teeth, hair, and vision.
World’s Ugliest Dog 2018: Zsa Zsa, the English Bulldog
Zsa Zsa, an English Bulldog with an impressively long tongue and a wide, squat stance, took home the title in 2018. A brachycephalic breed, she had all the classic traits of her breed but with a little extra flair that set her apart. Her drooling and her leisurely swagger won the hearts of many.
By the time she won the contest, Zsa Zsa was 9 years old, showing the world that beauty (or a lack thereof, traditionally speaking) knows no age. She had spent five years in a puppy mill before being adopted by her loving family from a rescue shelter. Her story is not just one of winning a title but also about the importance of dog adoption and giving animals a second chance at a loving home.

World’s Ugliest Dog 2019: Scamp the Tramp
Scamp is another pup that defied beauty standards to win the title in 2019. With his matted fur, tiny legs, and unique face, Scamp charmed his way into the judges’ hearts.
Before his rise to fame, Scamp had a rough start in life. He was rescued by Yvonne Morones from a shelter in Los Angeles, saving him from an uncertain fate. His life took a dramatic turn from being a stray to becoming a beloved pet and eventually an internet sensation after winning the contest.

World’s Ugliest Dog 2014: Peanut, the whatever-Peanut-is
Peanut, a small dog with a wild, toothy grin and an intense gaze, won the contest in 2014. His unique look was due to some health issues, but that didn’t stop him from capturing the love and attention of everyone around him. Peanut was a reminder that every dog has its day.
Before his fame, Peanut had a tough start in life, enduring severe burns in a fire caused by abusive owners. His survival and subsequent recovery showcased not only his resilience but also the dedication of those who cared for him afterward. Peanut’s scars were a testament to his strength and the cruel treatment he overcame.
World’s Ugliest Dog 2015: Quasi Modo the Chinese Crested
Quasi Modo, with a short spine syndrome, had a very distinctive appearance that helped her clinch the title in 2015. She had a hunched back that made her look unlike any other dog, but her spirit and energy were infectious.
Quasi Modo’s win brought significant attention to dogs with special needs and conditions. Her story highlighted the importance of adopting pets with disabilities and the joy they can bring to families. Quasi Modo became an ambassador for animals that are often overlooked because of their physical differences.
World’s Ugliest Dog 2022: Mr Happy Face, another Chinese Crested
Mr. Happy Face is another memorable dog who captured the title of the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest, clinching the crown in 2022.
Winning the title brought Mr. Happy Face and his owner an opportunity to advocate for the adoption of shelter dogs, particularly those that might be overlooked due to their appearance. Every dog, regardless of looks, can bring joy and companionship to the right home.
These dogs remind us that it’s not just about looking perfect—it’s about personality, charm, and the joy they bring to our lives. They might be called “ugly,” but they’re pretty darn adorable to those who love them.
