When you consider how much old tyres cost to replace, throwing them out after you’ve bought new ones seems wasteful. They might not be worth hundreds the way brand new wheels are, but your old tyres don’t have to go straight to landfill.

Here are five clever ways to use them.

1. Donate them to a stable yard or horse farm

It might seem strange, but people with horses have loads of uses for old tyres and will happily take them off your hands. They can use them to decorate their jumps, or to go around water or feed buckets so horses can’t kick them over.

So, offer your used, old tyres to your local horse-mad equestrians. They’ll love you for it!

2. Make old tyre pet beds

Dog and cat beds don’t have to be fancy store-bought ones. If you have a cat or dog at home, old tyres can make a really cute and comfy bed for them.

Simply wash the tyre clean, paint them in a fun colour or vibrant pattern, then line it with a big fluffy pillow or cushion. Add as many blankets as you want to make the perfect crash pad for your pet! Perhaps it’ll end up being their fave spot for watching cat TV or dog TV?

3. Use them for tyre planters

By mounting a tyre (or half tyre) to a wall, you have a cute hanging planter. They’re perfect for planting herbs or succulents in small spaces, and can add a lot of character to garden or wall.

them with a sheet and use them as planters on the floor like normal pots. Simply follow these instructions. As you can see, with a bit of cutting and some paint, they look lovely!

4. Make a tyre sandpit

If you have kids or pets, you can make a sandpit from old tyres. You’ll probably want fairly big tyres, so this might be best for SUV and 4×4 drivers. When filled with garden sand, old tyres can be turned into a fun place for kids to play.

Or, you could use them for dogs to dig and play in. A sandpit is a great way to exercise your dog without walking and can even help to limit destructive, problematic behaviours in dogs.

5. If all else fails, recycle your old tyres

If you can’t upcycle your old tyres, you can always recycle them. It’s just the responsible thing to do. Why? Only around 16% of tyres in Australia are recycled. There are lots of companies who will collect tyres and responsibly recycle them for you. Or you can drop them off at your nearest approved tyre recycling facility.

Either way, you’ll rest easy knowing they’re being reused, recycled, or upcycled in some way rather than harming the planet.

Other things to know about your car tyres

Taking good care of your tyres can improve their longevity. You know, so that you don’t have 87 tyre planters in your garden by 2025. Learn why tyre pressure is important, and make sure they’re regularly aligned by the professionals.

Plus, all car owners and drivers should know how to change a tyre. Even if you have brand new ones, a puncture or pothole can necessitate an emergency tyre-change.

If you’re a PD Insurance customer, you can add roadside assistance to your comprehensive car insurance policy from only $89 per year (at the time of writing). Which means a trusty car expert will come out and change your tyre for you if you find yourself stuck on the side of the road with a puncture!
