Getting organized, eating healthier or renewing your gym membership are all common New Year’s resolutions. But have you given some thought around adding your furkid to your New Year’s Resolutions list? We thought it might be fun to share ideas for making your happy cat or dog even happier and healthier in the months to come.

Among these epic ideas are making yummy DIY pet meals (move aside Gordon Ramsey), learning to understand what your dog or cat is trying to tell you, and pet grooming. Quite a few of these things are probably already part of your pet parenting routine, but you can amp them up with even greater parenting skills.  😎

So, without further ado, here are some super easy-to-accomplish pet resolutions…

New Year’s Resolutions to make your dog or cat happy

May as well share some positive new year intentions with your favourite fur person, right? Why not:

1. Always share the love

Your pet probably prefers not to spend too much time alone, regardless of how swag they pretend to be. They might put up with it for a few hours a day but they’d much rather be curled up in your lap or walking beside you at your local park. They may even settle on a comfy rug a few metres away where they can keep an eye on you.

Sometimes you might not have that kind of availability schedule, and even those who do sometimes need to go to a store that isn’t pet friendly. So, what to do? Consider pet sharing as your New Year’s resolution this year. Businesses like dogshare.com.au are ready and waiting to make life easier and happy for all kinds of pet lovers, whether you own one and need a break or just want to spend some quality time with one.

2. Catch those Zzz’s with your furkid

Your furbaby might be a good candidate for sleeping in your bed this year unless you have allergies. As you know, this leads to better health and happiness for your pet and you.

For those who don’t know, sleeping with your cat and sleeping with your dog in your bed can have several health benefits that could help you live longer. Having your pet next to you while you sleep is a great way to be close even when you’ve got a demanding work schedule.

This downtime with your pet makes them feel loved and secure, and is rewarding for you as well. And with health benefits like lowering your risk of heart attack, who wants to pass up on that opportunity?

3. It’s time for a pamper session!

Undertaking regular pet care means less flyaway fur and toenail mud landing on your doona when your pup snuggles in your bed. While pet maintenance can get overlooked when we’re busy or stressed, it’s much more than that.

The purpose of frequent pet grooming like cutting their nails and health maintenance like routine worm, flea and tick treatments helps ensure your pet’s wellbeing and long-term health. The thing is, you want to feel confident taking them for walks and snuggle on the couch knowing they won’t get parasites, tear stains, or dandruff. Getting them used to being brushed and washed is a great way to spend quality time together.

Keeping up with simple pet care is the best resolution you can make for your pet parenting in 2023, and you won’t regret it.

4. Learn to cook for your pet like a Michelin Star Chef

There’s a reason why they say love is via the stomach. You can keep your pet healthy and happy by feeding them homemade food that’s bursting with unbeatable nutrition.

As you walk down the aisles of the supermarket, you’ll find endless pet food choices, many of which your vet won’t recommend. The fillings and preservatives in pet food may not provide your pet with the nutrition they need, and this can threaten their health.

Even if you aren’t much of a cook, many pet-focused New Year resolution meals are super easy to make. There are plenty of homemade happy cat recipes and happy dog food recipes that make multiple portions you can store in the fridge or freeze for later use.

5. Learn how to speak fluent Bark or Meow as a new year’s resolution

As pet parents, we enjoy chatting with our furry friends. Why wouldn’t we? They’re the most attentive listeners around! It’s evident that they respond as well (my cat seemed to have some choice words when I refused to give her more treats). Understanding fluent Meow or Woof will make your pet happy and help you bond on a deeper level.

After learning how to interpret their body language, there’s a good chance you’ll be happily surprised when you find out how often they tell you they love you or how much they want to be patted or held. As 2023 rolls in, learn how to speak dog and how to speak cat ameowzingly – it’s simpler than you think.

6. Backpack with your happy dog or cat

There is nothing better than going on holiday with your adorable puppy or curious cat! The memories you create will never cease to make you smile, so make it your top New Year’s resolution.

The Australian outback is perfect for star gazing, mountain meandering, and river splashing when travelling with pets. Besides being one of the most beautiful places on earth with breathtaking scenery, it offers lots of pet-friendly accommodation as well. 7. Keep training your pawsome pet as a New Year’s Resolution

It might seem that training pets is just about potty training and setting them up for life when young? Think again. In addition to keeping your pet mentally and physically stimulated, training them builds your relationship with them. What could be a better New Year resolution than this?

Read about positive reinforcement for dog training, for example. It works wonders. Also find out about cat toilet training. Why not?
