What is Random Acts of Kindness Day? It’s a day made to remind us to perform kindness and generosity to those around us – be they friends, family or strangers. We see it as applying to helping animals and humans alike!
With the day just around the corner (it’s held on February 17 in Australia), we’ve rounded up some simple ways you can spread kindness. Of course, being PD, for us it’s all about pets, so we’ve honed in on acts of kindness to animals. Check out these tail-wagging ideas…

Who started Random Acts of Kindness Day?
As the name would suggest, Random Acts of Kindness Day is a day made to encourage people to perform acts of kindness and generosity to others. It started in 1995 in Denver, Colorado, by a non-profit organisation called the Random Acts Of Kindness Foundation. The event spread to New Zealand nine years later, in 2004, and the observance of the holiday became more and more widespread.
In New Zealand, Random Acts of Kindness Day is celebrated on September 1st. However, it’s also recognised by some countries on other days throughout the year. In Australia it’s celebrated on 17 February. It goes without saying that doing random acts of kindness is something that can be done every day of the year! This can be anything from helping a neighbour, buying a stranger a cup of coffee, or volunteering at a local organisation.
1. Volunteer at an animal shelter
First up is volunteering. Animal shelters across Australia are always in need of extra help. Perhaps you could spend your Random Acts of Kindness Day lending them a hand?
Many of us may want to volunteer, but don’t know where to start. It’s a good idea to plan your trip beforehand and contact the shelter you have in mind to find out what their needs are. Start by searching for shelters in your area and visit their websites to learn more about their services and mission.
Then, reach out to let them know you’re interested in volunteering. Ask them specifically about their volunteer program and requirements. You may need to submit an application and provide any necessary information, such as your contact info and availability.
Some shelters will need you to attend an orientation session to learn about their policies and procedures. Depending on the shelter, you may be able to choose from a variety of volunteer roles, such as dog walking, kennel cleaning, or fostering. You may also want to get any additional training they offer, such as animal handling or first aid. Once you’ve completed the necessary steps, you can start volunteering!

2. Donate as a random act of kindness
If you’re short on time, donating money or useful items is another way you can celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day.
There are many reputable animal health and welfare organisations in Australia that are dedicated to helping animals in need. Some of these include Vets Beyond Borders, the Animal Welfare League, Cat Haven, Dog Trust, Sydney Dog and Cars Home and the Humane Society.
These organisations are always in need of several essentials. This includes food (canned or dry), bedding such as blankets, towel and pet beds, toys and treats, cleaning supplies, collars and leashes and first aid supplies like bandages and gauze. Contact them beforehand to find out if there are specific items they may need. Monetary donations are also always appreciated as they can be used to cover the shelter’s operating expenses such as veterinary care and utilities.

3. Adopt a pet this Random Acts of Kindness Day
One of the most direct ways you can help animals is to adopt one. Instead of purchasing your next dog or cat from a breeder, why not take one in from an animal shelter? Australia has a significant overpopulation of cats and dogs, and, increasingly, Aussies are giving up their pet to a shelter.
Adopting a shelter pet gives them a second chance at a happy and healthy life.
But there are other reasons to adopt instead of shop, too! For example, adopting is usually less expensive than buying one from a pet store or breeder. Plus, when you adopt a pet from a shelter, you’re not only giving them a new home, you’re freeing up space in the shelter for another animals in need.

4. Spay or neuter to help our pet community
Lastly, did you know that spaying or neutering your dog or cat is essentially an act of kindness?
Spaying or neutering (the difference is in the pet’s gender) helps to control pet overpopulation. This is a big problem in Australia. Overpopulation leads to more animals ending up in shelters, or becoming strays and suffering from neglect or abuse. Ultimately, it helps to reduce the number of pets that end up euthanised.
Spaying or neutering your pet can provide medical benefits too. These include reducing the risk of certain types of cancer and avoiding reproductive health problems. It also has positive effects on their behaviour, such as reducing aggressive or territorial behaviour and minimising the risk of roaming.
